Covered Chocolate Oreos - Blog by Andrea Abdelhay

Covered Chocolate Oreos

Wedding season is soon approaching so I thought I’d share this fun project I took on for an engagement party.
The future Bride and Groom wanted an edible bonboniere (party favor) so I decided to make chocolate covered Oreos with Brides and Grooms on them.
This dessert can be VERY sweet so I suggest not using candy melts for the entire cookie. However for the details, candy melts were perfect. I used Merckens super white and tinted it to the appropriate colors with Americolor gel food coloring (ie: copper (flesh tone) for the skin, electric blue for the jewelry and bowtie) and Merckens Cocoa dark chocolate for the tuxedo.
To fill the remainder of the mold I melted Barry Callebaut chocolate wafers.

Step 1: Prepare a piping bag for each color you will be using and a microwave safe bowl with each color as well. It takes about 90 seconds to melt the candy melts in the microwave.

A helpful tip is to only put about 2 teaspoons of melted chocolate into each piping bag for the details and to squeeze out any remaining chocolate to avoid it hardening in the bag once finished.

Squeeze melted chocolate of the appropriate color into the lowest cavity, then layer with the next color. Sometimes using a spoon was easier when it was a larger area.

Step 2: Refrigerate for a few minutes and then pour 1 teaspoon of melted chocolate wafers over the colored candy.

Step 3: Insert an Oreo cookie and press down, allowing the melted chocolate to fill the sides of the cookie.

Step 4: Cover the Oreos with 1 teaspoon of more melted chocolate.

Step 5: Gently tap the entire plastic mold onto the table to remove any air bubbles and refrigerate for 20-30 minutes.

Step 6: Turn over the mold and pop each chocolate covered Oreo out and enjoy!
